Key Stage 3

During Key Stage 3 students have the opportunity to get involved in a broad range of different activities, (see curriculum maps), that, in combination, develop the whole body. They also experience a range of roles ranging from performer to official. They will perform as an individual in a group or as part of a team. Through these experiences students will develop skills in physical activity, make and apply decisions, develop physical and mental capacity, evaluate and improve and make informed choices about healthy, active lifestyles.

Key Stage 4

During Key Stage 4 students have the opportunity to opt for BTEC courses or GCSE PE. The BTEC course involves students in gathering evidence for different kinds of assignments, such as fitness and anatomy. It includes both practical and written lessons. There is no end of course examination The GCSE course follows on from the Key Stage 3 programme of study by providing students with opportunities to lead healthy and active lifestyles by choosing a variety of roles and activities in which to participate in physical activity. The content of both the GCSE and BTEC courses are designed to provide a route to further study in Further Education awards, such as A- levels and or Diplomas.
All students also have one compulsory lesson of PE, which involves specialising in a particular aspect of PE, such as Leadership or Health and Fitness. The Leadership pathway is very popular with our students and the majority of them successfully complete the Sports Leaders Award through this course. The leaders organise and take the lead for the Primary Sports Festival and Sports Days in the Summer term.

Extra-Curricular activities

The Y7 girls won the Barnsley schools Futsal tournament, the Y11 boys won the Futsal tournament and the South Yorkshire Finals. The Y8 boys won the Barnsley schools cup and we had many students winning events at the Secondary Barnsley Athletics Championships. We also had our Y7 and Y8s win the Disability Cricket festival and therefore competed at Headingly Cricket Ground.
